El Descanso del Toro is by far one of the very best properties with the greatest potential in Vilcabamba. This resort could be considered the only 5 star hotel in the area. This gorgeous complex is in the heart of the Vilcabamba valley with 360 degree views of the mountains surrounding us & is located only a few minutes drive from the center of Vilcabamba’s town square. In total there is approximately 5,635 square meters of construction (60,654 square feet), and the property measures a total of.13,845 square meters (1.384 hectares/ 3.42 acres).
At the entrance of the property there is a public restaurant -brewery with its own heated pool (with slide and waterfall), jacuzzi, playground, a large conference room, and offices. This recreational area & restaurant (with a capacity for about 140 people) is available to patrons for day use for those guests that are not staying within the hotel. This entry operation has been functioning as a very lucrative business in addition to the hotel. Old growth trees adorn the windows and terraces of this initial structure & have been incorporated into the building’s design (instead of being cut down). The abundance of plants, flowers and these trees decorating this entry building makes for a very inviting indoor/outdoor venue. This restaurant boasts upper balconies branching off of the indoor seating upstairs with adjoining conference rooms and offices, there is also a mid level terrace, and a large lower deck with views to the pool, gardens, and the famous Mandango mountain. Inside the restaurant there is a grand room with high ceilings, a stage, and capacity for around 65 people. A stone fireplace compliments the wooden features within this impressive and homey adobe construction. This entry business has its own large parking lot in addition to the parking for the hotel and events center behind.
The hotel consists of four connected buildings surrounding an internal court yard with gardens, a playground, a large heated pool with waterfall, a hot tube inside a cave, and a steam room. There is a giant penthouse suite on the top floor of the tallest building with views to the west; this building also has additional guest rooms on the middle floor, and restaurant/game room-terrace below. Throughout the hotel buildings there are a total of 26 rooms, 15 of which have their own private large indoor jacuzzi tubs, and many with their own balconies and/or shared terraces. Within the entry lobby there is a reception desk, a seating area/living room, and a dining room with pool (billard) table.
At the back of the property beyond a metal gate lies a large family home with its own heated indoor pool, jacuzzi, sauna, covered patios, office, 9 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, 1 social bathroom, a living room, dining room, and kitchen. There is also a guest house next door with 2 bedrooms, one and a half bathrooms, a living room, dining space and kitchen. There is also a caretaker house behind this family house with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, kitchen, living room, 2 large storage spaces, and a garage.
Beyond these houses there is a beautiful old church with a capacity for about 25 people surrounded by a labrynth of gardens and paths leading to the tennis court & spa to the West, or the events center and grounds to the East. The muti room spa hosts massage tables, steam boxes, a private garden jacuzzi, and is home to many of the properties’ fruit (mostly citrus trees). In this area you will also find the ground well that services water to the entire facility as a back up water source. The water capacity and sources are abundant with excellent systems and reserve tanks guaranteeing the entire property with ample water always.
The events center of Descanso del Toro is the largest in Vilcabamba and the entire South of Ecuador with a capacity of 350+ people. It is the only venue around with a covered stage, covered dance floor, and a giant conference center or banquet facility. Attached to this events center is a large commercial size kitchen, bar, seating areas, garden spots, expansive lawns, and ponds with bridges leading into the gardens where a quaint chapel resides. This incredible facility has hosted many weddings, events, parties, and gatherings.
The parking lot at the entrance to the restaurant hosts 18 vehicles, and the parking space in front of the hotel hosts 10 vehicles. The owners also rents a neighboring lot for additional parking for another 45 vehicles.
The hotel pool and indoor pool at the family house are heated with electricity, and the restaurant pool is heated by gas.
